 Born January 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana, 
After graduating high school Ellen worked a variety of 
odd jobs in the New Orleans area. Known for her daffy, wry wit, 
DeGeneres made her stand-up debut at an area coffee house's
amateur hour in 1981 before moving to television.   
   
 Her television credits include Ellen (1994–present) and (1989). Her films include Mr. Wrong (1996). Her book, My Point. . . And I Do Have One (1995) topped the New York Times bestseller list. DeGeneres earned an Emmy nomination performance as host of the 1996 Grammy Awards. .

Television and film actress whose coming out of the closet in real life and on her sitcom was one of the biggest entertainment stories of 1997. DeGeneres had declared earlier that she, too is a lesbian. Her lover, Anne Heche has proposed marriage. 
Ellen has accepted. They'll marry as soon as gay marriage is legal.
