It wasn't until k.d. was seventeen that she realized  her attraction to women was against the norm. By then, she was a budding songwriter. In 1992, she declaired her lesbianism in a gay and lesbian magazine, The Advocate. "I think coming out helped a lot for me personally, because living in honesty and living open, and in truth is an amazing feeling and I highly recommend it for anyone. No matter what you're hiding, just let it go."           With her short-back-and-sides hair, and Olympic swimmer's body, she is the girl  next door and the boy next door all wrapped up in one.                     Friends     "When I'm single,I'm a bit scattered--I'm always doing an interview with one eye on the waitress"-Out, Aug'97 (on her settlin' down with Hailey)         "I think it's a lot of things," she says. "I don't think it's any one thing. I think it's a choice, for some people. I think it's genetics. I think it's the result of being abused, like a reaction. I think it's completely natural in some cases. I don't know why I'm gay. I find women more enticing, both emotionally and sexually.". "I want to be recognized as a professional singer, not a professional lesbian."
